Our collection features advanced fabrics such as Sunbrella Solid and Commercial 95 Mesh, designed to effectively block the sun’s harmful UV rays. These state-of-the-art materials are not only weather-resistant but also capable of withstanding extreme conditions. Additionally, select fabrics within our assortment offer waterproof or water-resistant properties, ensuring comprehensive protection for your outdoor spaces.

Types of fabrics for Sun Sails

Mighty Covers offers custom and standard-sized shade sails in a variety of fabrics and weights. The most common fabric is high-density polyethylene, which is durable and resistant to moisture, mildew, and rot. Coolaroo and Commercial 95 fabrics are high-density mesh and can be installed flat. Sunbrella fabric is water-resistant and nearly waterproof, but must be hung with an 18-20 degree slope to prevent water pooling and damage. A quality shade sail will have stainless steel D-rings in the corners and reinforced edges.

Benefits of Shade Sails Include:

  • Block up to 98% of the sun’s harmful UV rays, helping to prevent sunburn and cancer.
  • Regulate outdoor temperature with cooling shade.
  • Reduce cooling costs by reducing heat gain from the sun.
  • More economical than building a permanent structure.

Why do Shade Sails have Curves in the sides?

Shade sails have a curved perimeter to control fabric tension. This is achieved through a principle called catenary tensioning. A catenary is the shape that a hanging chain or cable takes under its own weight. When the corners of a shade sail are tensioned, the curved perimeter attempts to straighten out. However, because the curves are attached to the fabric in the center of the sail, they create tension, which prevents the fabric from sagging or flapping in the wind.

The amount of curvature in the perimeter depends on the size and weight of the shade sail. Larger and heavier sails will have a greater curvature. The curvature is also affected by the height of the mounting points. Higher mounting points will create more tension in the fabric, which results in a flatter sail.

Proper tensioning of a sail is essential for its performance and longevity. A properly tensioned sail will not sag, flap, or wrinkle. It will also be more resistant to tearing and damage from the wind.

Shade sails and sun sails are easy to install, with a variety of mounting options to choose from. They can be attached to homes, trees, free-standing steel poles, or wooden posts. To connect a shade sail to a house as a patio cover or between buildings, you will need the proper hardware, such as eye bolts, turnbuckles, and shackles.

If you are installing a sail in an open area, you will need to support it with wood posts or steel columns embedded in concrete footings. For easy seasonal removal, consider using concrete anchors.

Here is a general overview of the installation process for a shade sail:

  1. Choose the mounting locations. Make sure the mounting points are strong enough to support the weight of the shade sail.
  2. Attach the hardware. Install the eye bolts, turnbuckles, and shackles at the mounting locations.
  3. Hang the shade sail. Attach the corners of the shade sail to the hardware using shackles or carabiners.
  4. Tension the sail. Use the turnbuckles to tighten the shade sail until it is taut.

It is important to note that sails should be installed with a slight slope to allow for water runoff. This will help to prevent the sail from pooling water and sagging.

NOTE: It is recommended that they be taken down in areas of the country that receives snow regularly. Snow loads could possibly cause damage to them if they are left up year round.

Comparison of Shade Sail Dimension with Attachment Points
120in = Attachment Point Dimensions
108in = Shade Sail Dimensions

When we are provided with mounting point measurements, shade sails are then designed with a reduction of approximately 10 percent of your attachment point measurements (see example above). This is done to allow enough space for the mounting hardware and to tension the sail. All final measurements will be approximate due to tolerances during the fabricating process.

Due to manufacturing tolerances and fabric stretch, finished shade sail dimensions may vary 1.5″ +/-.
