Proper Slope Required for water runoff

Sunbrella fabric is water resistant, and sun sail shades made from this fabric have to be installed with at least a 20 degree slope to allow water to run off and not pool on top of the sail. The chart at the right lists measurements for the amount of vertical drop recommended based on the size of the sail.

Reinforced Perimeter – Webbing or Cables

Residential Sails come with 1-1/2 inch UV inhibitive reinforcement webbing, which is standard for normal residential use in sails up to about 325 square feet. 1-1/2 inch webbing is rated with an approximate 1,800 pound break strength. For larger sail shades or in areas that experience above average high winds, 2 inch webbing with an approximate break strength of 5,500 pounds is recommended. (Reinforced 1/8 inch cables with a break strength of approximately 2,000 pounds and 1/4 inch cables with a break strength of approximately 6,000 pounds are also available) Each corner has a welded, solid, marine grade, stainless steel attachment ring to aid in attaching the shade sail to a structurally strong attachment point.

Why do Shade Sails have Curves in the sides?

Shade sails have a curved perimeter to control fabric tension. This is achieved through a principle called catenary tensioning. A catenary is the shape that a hanging chain or cable takes under its own weight. When the corners of a shade sail are tensioned, the curved perimeter attempts to straighten out. However, because the curves are attached to the fabric in the center of the sail, they create tension, which prevents the fabric from sagging or flapping in the wind.

The amount of curvature in the perimeter depends on the size and weight of the shade sail. Larger and heavier sails will have a greater curvature. The curvature is also affected by the height of the mounting points. Higher mounting points will create more tension in the fabric, which results in a flatter sail.

Proper tensioning of a sail is essential for its performance and longevity. A properly tensioned sail will not sag, flap, or wrinkle. It will also be more resistant to tearing and damage from the wind.

We offer a variety of shapes and sizes

Sunbrella Shade Sails are available in several sizes, colors, and shapes, including squares, rectangles, equilateral triangles, and right angle triangles.

When calculating the size of the sun sail that you would need for a certain area, be sure to allow for about 12 to 18 inches of space between the shade sail’s heavy duty d-rings and the mounting points for the necessary mounting hardware including turnbuckles. It is better for the sail shade to be too small than too large. If it is too large, you will not be able to tighten when necessary, but if they are too small, you can still attach the sail shade to the mounting points with the help of a few lengths of chain or a piece of aircraft cable.

Note: 1) Due to the available Sunbrella fabric widths, and depending on the size ordered, your shade sail may have seams. 2) Due to manufacturing tolerances and fabric stretch, finished shade sail dimensions may vary 1.5″ +/-.
